Hey All,

Just set up my 10 gallon tank last Monday. I let the water filter for a few days, treated it with the chlorine/chloromine remover..

I added 2 Zebra Danios three days ago and added 3 neon tetras today so I could use them to cycle the tank...Ammonia is at safe levels and my nitrate and nitrite readings are in the safe zone as well.

I would like to add 2 African Dwarf Frogs and 1 Betta....or....

2 African Dwarf Frogs and 1 Paddle Tail Newt....

What would be the best combo to have as far as space and comfort for the animals?

I have a feeling it would be too much to add 2 dwarf frogs, 1 Betta, and 1 Newt..

Hi modelbuilder, and welcome to the forum.

Sounds as if you have great plans, but if I were you, I'd hold off a little before adding anything to the tank. It is still cycling.

Are you sure you understand the Nitrogen Cycle? It generally takes a bit longer than 6 days.

If you could tell us your specific readings of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate we could advise you much better.

I find it odd to get NitrIte and NitrAte readings so soon. Did you seed the tank with anything? Just curious.

Hey There,

I don't plan on adding any more fish to the tank for another 3 to 4 weeks. I read that only having two tiny fish in the tank will slow the cycling process...so I put in the three tetras...

I should reprhase...after my tank is cycled..plug in question from first post....

OK. Gotcha.

Just like every species, including humans, fish do have personalities. And betta fall into that catagory as well.

Betta are usually only agressive with their own kind. There are lots of fish that can co-exist with them, i.e. guppys, platties, corys, etc.

Bear in mind that frogs and bettas require exact water conditions in addition to nutritional needs (food).

I would suggest you provide a lot of plants (fake or real) and "hiding places" for the betta to reduce any stress. Remember it's a 10 gal tank. In oceans and lakes fish can roam hundreds of miles to escape harm, but have nowhere to go in a small tank. I am quite sure it is generaly indicated that a Dwarf Frog can live with a betta. Just make sure it is an African Dwarf Frog and not an African Clawed Frog! I would also keep an eye on the danios as they might chase and/or harrass the betta, thus the hiding places needed.

Acclimate the frog first and the betta last.

modelbuilder, I didnt even know about cycling a tank 10 months ago. Lucky for me, i found this site before I bought a tank. After a few weeks of thinking these people are nuts then , after many many questions and nice people here with patience made me see "the error of my ways". So might as well take the time to cycle the tank or in few weeks you going to be wondering what happened to all the pretty fish as they slowly die one by one but yet the tank is crystal clear.

Maybe its like dripping water into a container and the contain after awhile gets all slimmy smelly. Im not sure if thats a good analogy.
