| Re: What fish besides cichlids do well in high ph? Hi there, I've had my 55 gal freshwater tank for about a year and a half and I have the same issue with high pH. Mine is well above 8. I personally have been successful with all of the fish I've put in my tank. I have several species of tetras, barbs, platies, and gouramis. When I first started I tried to lower the pH but the buffering capacity of the local tap water was just too high. I gave up on that idea and just decided to see what would happen. So far so good.
I should mention also that a couple of months ago I turned my aquarium into a planted aquarium with CO2 input. This does lower the pH quite nicely. So, I guess another possibility is to add some plants and a DIY CO2 system, then you wouldn't have to worry about high pH anymore.
