Hello- I'm new to the forum, and I have a question about high ph water. I have a 75 gal tank with a Cascade 1000 canister filter and a Penguin Emperor filter system. My ph consistently tests out around 8.3 -8.5. I have some lava rocks and gravel in the tank, but that's about it.

I've been keeping African Cichlids in the tank for years, and they've always done great. Honestly, I've grown tired of the cichlids and am wondering what my options are for other species that would do well in this water. I've let my population dwindle down to 2, so a total replacement would be acceptable if the new residents don't play well with cichlids.

nothing really i can think of besides gold fish....to play with you ph levels and get them down to 7.0 would give you much greater options.....its really easy to get your ph down and keep it there using a ph regulator by seachem.

Hi there, I've had my 55 gal freshwater tank for about a year and a half and I have the same issue with high pH. Mine is well above 8. I personally have been successful with all of the fish I've put in my tank. I have several species of tetras, barbs, platies, and gouramis. When I first started I tried to lower the pH but the buffering capacity of the local tap water was just too high. I gave up on that idea and just decided to see what would happen. So far so good.

I should mention also that a couple of months ago I turned my aquarium into a planted aquarium with CO2 input. This does lower the pH quite nicely. So, I guess another possibility is to add some plants and a DIY CO2 system, then you wouldn't have to worry about high pH anymore.
