Looks like a platy to me, which is a type of live bearer. No egg laying going on here, they give birth to live young in the tank. Usually the females will get a larger belly as they get closer to giving birth (The fry are developing). On some species of live bearers (guppies particularly) a dark spot will become visible as well, also indicating that the fish will likely give birth soon. It's possible that the female swelled up with babies, and as stated by the OP's brother, died while giving birth. It is a very stressful process for the females.
