Can I sell fish that I have bred or has outgrown my tank, to the lfs? And what price would you reccomend I sell them back at. (what % of sale price)
Would stores like petsmart buy them or only little family owned stores buy them. Thanks!!!

I cannot think of any reason why you could not. They are usually open to trading so why not an occasional sale? As far as price goes I would think that would depend on supply and demand and making it reasonable enough that the LFS can make a profit. They have to be able to make a profit, or they won't be in business very long. I am not sure if this answers your question but Dr. F is around somewhere and so he can probably answer much better than I.

My local store will buy fish if they need them. Do not expect much. They told me abought $1 each for small angels, a little more if I took store credit instead of cash. Don T.

I second the "Do not expect much." I have traded fish before and then seen what they turn around and sell them for and you don't get a great deal. Then again from the sounds of it I don't think you are trying to make a living at it. Plus chances are that for sure if you bred them and most likely if they grew to the point they don't fit you will be making a good chunk of pure profit no matter what.

Many stores will take/trade/rarely buy fish. Your mom and pops are more likely to than Petsmart or whatever. We will take a fish if it is something that is in need of a better home, unless its big because we don't have room for oscars, pacus, red tail cats and other tank busters. I will trade for something a little more expensive, lets say some one has a bunch of cichlids or something, I would offer them credit. My boss typically says pay up to 75% of what WE would pay our wholesaler. I'm more leniet and usually will offer full wholesaler price. Other stores will offer maybe, MAYBE, 25% of what they pay or maybe 25% of what they sell them for. We don't mark our fish up as much so its not as much sticker shock when someone comes back and sees their fish for sale. Very occasionally we will BUY a fish if it is rare or something hard for us to get from a wholesaler. For example we have a local breeder that specializes in goodieds and other livebearers but has fantastic Black Calvus, the black Calvus I would buy because they are rare and can cost A LOT. He sells them at auctions for sometimes up to $20 a piece.

Let me tell you about my one and only experience seeling fish back to a shop. I inherited a lovely jaguar cichlid, and he out grew my tank before i was able to get him a new tank, alas he had to be sold so he may have a happy life. Anywho, being a magnificent speciem, i expected a little bit for him. the store owner turned around and offered me 50 dollars for him. Well not knowing alot about the fish trade at this point (it was about 3 years ago), i accepted his offer only to return the next to find him selling the fish for 140 dollars. Well my blood boiled and i refuse to enter that shop again
