Wink Starting over...

Okay! We have relegated the other tank to a Land hermit crab set up. Tomorrow we will purchase a 55 with stand. I assume the filter and old heater I have will work for cycling purposes ( or at least to get it started). Anyone have any suggestions on equipment? Which filters are preferred? I don't think I want to spend the money on a cannister. What about heaters. I read somewhere that 2 smaller heaters in a tank heat the water more consistantly. Is anyone doing that? I have seen ads for the RENA smartfilter and SmartHeater, comments? And of course, a good place online to buy such things. I am starting to get excited again.

Re: Starting over...

I thought you had everything from the other tank. I don't remember what all you had, but it should all work. If you really want to start from scratch, I would say what you want really depends on what fish you want to keep. As far as the heaters, I have 2 300 watt heaters in my 90 gal tank. I have 1 on each side near the filters. (I have 2 back filters running) They seem to do a good job of regulating the water. They cycle on and off at different times, I guess because of water circulation. Works well.

Just my $.02,

I like Rena products, my canisters are all Rena...but

I think you are going to find the Rena smart filter very expensive to run. I use a small one with an Eheim surface skimmer, works well, but the filter replacements cost a fortune. I replace a filter insert once a week...take a look at the cost before you buy.

Jay,

I understand that filters actually do better when they get a little clogged (filters out smaller particles). Why do you change them so often? Just curious.

oggpister,

I have been using both HOB and canister filters from Marineland for a few years with good luck. Dr. Fosters & Smith is where I do my online shopping (I also buy a lot of dog and cat supplies). They are definately cheaper than the LFS. Canister filters do cost more but they do a better job and are quieter. I also use 2 heaters in my larger 95 gal.

To clarify, I have a penguin 200 biowheel filter, that filters up to 50 gal., the new tank is a 55. My heater is glass, don't know how old it is. I would feel safer with a new, non-breakable type. We have started the cycle on the new tank (just minutes ago). Its going smoothly so far....
