I don't know how much bio-material will be on an ornament, but it can not hurt. You can us some gravel or filter material from an established tank.
Good luck

Good Catch I was reading all the posts but thought that was a likely culprit as well. I have seen magic easer take off some interesting stuff like restore an unfinished white pine banister to like new coloring after time and many hands (dirty small ones and greasy big ones) made it look like it was made of dark oak. and fingerprints on walls and white fridges (with the little dimples that are a pain to clean) but they do for all that have used them "melt" as used meaning they are slowly leaving themselves behind as you clean. And after using it on a bathtub after a remodel where it looked like they had mixed paint I noticed that the bathtub foamed (like bubble bath) the next few times We used it (rinsed for about 30 min with fresh water and clean cloth) but as the 2 cents was already given on this and I tend to ramble I guess this is my full nickels worth.
Good Luck

Re: Aaaarrrrggggghhhhh!

OH MY! Nope, didn't see that, because I didn't look. Hmmm. Well. that helps me ALOT. thanks so much. It turns out that more soap bubbles DID form after running the filter for several more hours. So we bought new rocks. Going to clean them today. And now, thanks to Fishtankforums, I know I need to pay closer attention to cleaning the tank itself. I believe I have just been saved from making a HUGE mistake. If I had just rinsed the tank and added the new rocks and it foamed again, I would have pobably quit. SHEESH! Thank-you, thank-you , thank-you. Okay, now what do I clean the tank with?

Re: Aaaarrrrggggghhhhh!

um I dont know what to use now I would spend a fair amount of time with the garden hose and the back porch.
Please do not act on this next bit until someone confirms or denies it but I know that sometimes we use salt as a scrubber for differing things because it will "absorb" chemicals so perhaps a salt scrub of the insides of the tank to help gently remove the residue you already have. (handfulls of salt and a little water and elbow grease) I think rice (plain ole UNCOOKED rice could also work for larger debris) or maybe a clean sand. and then just make sure you rinse it really well any of those should be rinseable from the tank easily and not effect the later balance of the water. Again please wait til someone answers about my idea but it is a thot about a way to scrub the soap residue clear.
Good Luck

Re: Aaaarrrrggggghhhhh!

i use diluted vinegar to clean my stuff. as long as you rinse, it is fine. dont use it on porous materials and make sure it is distilled vinegar. It works very well on the tank itself as well as all plastic parts. if you have really stubborn stains on glass just turn the tank face down on the side you want to clean and let the water and vinegar sit for a little while until it will wipe off. Good luck

Re: Aaaarrrrggggghhhhh!

You are going to use pure ammonia in your fishless cycle anyway so you can use it as a cleaner to try and get rid of all the residue from the magic eraser. And tons of rinsing is still probably the best way to make sure you get it all gone.

Re: Aaaarrrrggggghhhhh!

excellent idea! I will try the ammonia. I am then going to put water in the tank and run the filter to see if I get suds. If no suds, I will add the new rocks. If no suds, I will add decor, etc. Then I get to cycle!!! At THIS rate I may have fish BY THE END OF THE SUMMER!!!! Seriously, I couldn't get through this without all your help...obviously. thanks.

they all sound like a great idea but i would be carefull with the sand/salt. if you are useing sand as a scrub you might scratch the glass if you do it hard enough. that would just be my guess though

Re: Aaaarrrrggggghhhhh!

I hadnt said hard, hard would hurt your hand too and the salt would disolve. but you make a good point when I said elbow grease I just meant the time consuming effort of anything he would need to use to scrub out the tank

I think this thread my be getting close a quarters worth rather than the pennies or nickle
