I have drilled and glued together a few pieces of lava rock (seen below) using hold tight epoxy by Marineland. The piece weighs 33 pounds, can I just place it in the tank or will I need to put something under the rock for the weight? Also is their anything I can do to blend the white glue so it does not stand out so much? The rock will eventually be covered with Java Moss.

Once it is in the tank it wont take long to cover with diatom algae, other than that, you might be able to use a colored sharpie to cover the parts you can see. Have no idea if the sharpie will add anything to your tank that will cause problems.

Im not sure about lava rock, but i have heard of other rock altering pH.

Speaking of altering the pH, I was thinking of building a retaining wall for my Echo Complete and was wondering what kind of rock to get. Someone suggested that I go to a quarry to get the rock since I will need a lot of it. Any ideas of what to get?

About the lava rock, the java moss should eventually cover the glue so it won't be as much as an eye sore, right? Of course, it's hard to be patient...

you could try covering the white glue with aquarium silicon then cover the silicon with black sand or something before it drys. The white will be hidden and you will not have used anything potentially harmful to your tank environment. Of course this idea is about a minute late as I only get online once every twenty years or so.....

Java moss grows pretty rapidly and should handle it along with any algae and diatom growth. If you're going to try the siliconing it over route try the black silicone and skip the adding sand to it hoping it sticks part. They've been making aquariums using black silicone for the seams since the late 90's. You might even find a silicone in a matching shade now.
