I also thought about cutting my filter extension in half but didn't.
It was near the bottom of my 55 gallon tank.
I just took the extension out and said thats that.
As for the guy missing parts... Id take it back.
Your missing 2 gray empty clamshell type filter holders.
Mine are filled with charcoal media.
Ive thought about trying 2 find 2 more of those myself to eliminate buying the Rite Size E cartidges that these use, as they are somewhat expensive.
I would then buy bulk floss pad and cut it to fit.
As for the filters you have being enough for your 90 gallon tank, you have plenty of filtration, as the 400 is good up to 85 gallons so I read on its own. So with both of your filters, you could turn them down to a lower setting and be fine
