In the bio wheel, I have 2 of the "media containers" that were supplied (1 for the left side and 1 for the right side). Inside each of the media containers I put the filter cartridges that came with it. However, each side of the filter has slots for 2 filters to slide in. Was I missing something when I got mine, or is that for later add-ons?

What do most people use in their bio wheel for filtration?

I've read some comments that some people don't like the HOB such as this, however, my LFS says theat they don't like the canisters. What other options are there? I'm running the Emperor 400 and Fluval 400 series as well. Is this enough for a 90 gal Cichlid?

You should have been suplyed with two baskets which go behind your filters.
Filters in front blue screen charchol in back. Right sise xx And then your two baskets. They are there for extra filtration. I put a fine filter floss in myne. Wheras you could put extra charchol, more floss( finer particles). Basicly any media that will fit. The choice is up to you depending on what you need to filter.

So basicly when you bought it you should have two filters(blue floss) and two empty filter trays. For filling with the media of your choice.

As per adiquate filtration I am not experienced enuf. lol leave that to another member. But sponge filters under gravel, sumps, wet dry, canisters hob. Are probably the most common.

Hope this helps I own a 280 emperor bio wheel and this was my experience.

I have the Emperor 400 as well and I filled my baskets with filter wool and put them in the slots behind (closer to the aquarium) the blue cartridges. It was really confusing - I read and re-read the directions and they didn't explain any of it. Also, I ender up cutting the filter extension in half because it was hitting the bottom of the tank. They neglected to put that in the directions as well. Hope this helps.

It was near the bottom of my 55 gallon tank.
I just took the extension out and said thats that.

As for the guy missing parts... Id take it back.

Your missing 2 gray empty clamshell type filter holders.

Mine are filled with charcoal media.

Ive thought about trying 2 find 2 more of those myself to eliminate buying the Rite Size E cartidges that these use, as they are somewhat expensive.
I would then buy bulk floss pad and cut it to fit.

As for the filters you have being enough for your 90 gallon tank, you have plenty of filtration, as the 400 is good up to 85 gallons so I read on its own. So with both of your filters, you could turn them down to a lower setting and be fine

It doesn't sound like he is missing anything. I have an emperor 280. Yours should have come with 4 pieces to put in those holes. 2 media containers that are empty. Those are optional. You can fill them with the media of your choice(if you want to) Some people choose just to put an extra mesh type of filter in it. You then should have two actual filters. They are blue mesh on the front, filled with carbon, and have a black back. Those do not go in the media containers. They go in the front two slots. Hope that helps and that yours is not set up differently than mine.

Yeah, I thought about taking out the middle extension but I liked the idea of mid-level filtration. I did take off the gray lever though because it stuck out like a sore thumb- the filter works great!

I noticed that they had a gray lever on the box at the store.
Mine doesnt have it. I guess previous owner took it off.

w/o the extension tube mine is a little above 1/2 way down the tank.
