Stand Capacity

My daughter would like to set up our 50 gallon aquarium on top of a 1980's stereo system stand. It is 4 ft by 2 ft and 24'' high. It has a wood divider in center and shelves that create four compartments for componants under the top. The shelves and frame are made of 1/2" light cherry with a box frame for a base. It's scandanavian style furniture like you would get at Scan or Ikea (some assembly was required).

I figure the aquarium weighs 250-275 lbs. with water, hood and other gear. Do you think the piece of furniture wll support it? Is there a way to calculate whether or not it will?

Well, 50 US Gal of water is = 417.2632055 Pounds OK, 417lbs.

That is not including the Tank, Gravel, Rocks or other stuff. Not knowing what your furniture is rated, I would be very worried about that kind of weight (over time) causing the support to weaken and possible wiggle side to side. (I know many Pre-Fab) TV/Stereo stands will get that way after time.

Maybe someone else will jump in and give some info that may help. I will be setting up my 55gal soon and I will rest easier knowing it is on a Iron Stand.

I have always consider the completed system to be right at 10 lbs per gallon. SO in your case I think it would need to support 550 pounds. I would throw in a few more just in case and want something that I thought could support say 600 pounds. Pop's in correct about the weight of the water but you also have the tank, gravel, and other equipment etc. People tend to lean on the cabinet occasional if there is a lip etc. That is a lot of weight to support and needs to be held by something pretty sturdy.
