umm help

i just bought a 40 gallon glass tank at a yard sale(i finally gave into my fiancee about having a fishtank). i got it home and i realised i know nothing about fishtanks. It came with 2 airpumps,a wisper 60 3 stage double filter,bubbler,shells,lots of filters,and a few decorative things for the tank. can someone give me some direction on how to get started? just please remember i am a trucker not a rocket scientist or someone with a p.h.d so please keep it simple. Is there any special tests i need to do on the water or anything?

Well, I would say you have a few questions to ask yourself. First and most important is whether you want a freshwater or saltwater tank. After that you should figure out what species you would like to keep and how much effort you are willing to put forth. Some species require quite a bit more care than others. Then you should read the articles on cycling your tank by following the link P-Daddy posted. This should atleast get you started. Then you can ask more questions and read the other posts and articles to get you on your way.
