| To get any really good advice you'll need to provide more information starting with what's already in the tank, how many, what size they are now and little things like the decor and water quality parameters would really help also. |

Has the tank been cycled yet? What are the water parameters (Nitrate, Nitrite, Ammonia, PH, ect.)?
In a 55 gallon you could do a pair of Jack Dempseys. Firemouths or Convict cichlids are also an option. You could check out what other cichlids your Local Fish Store carries, but I would avoid the larger growing ones like Oscars and Red Devils/Midas.
You could try a couple of different species of African cichlids. I would stick to only two species of more or less equal temperment, with 5 or 6 fish per species. You should see what species of cichlids you can find at your LFS. Lots of rocks to make caves for hiding places would be a must as well. |

| If you want to feed your fish feeders, I'd recommend breeding your own in a smaller seperate tank, like a 20 long or something. The feeder fish at petstores can be pretty unhealthy, and may infect your fish with something.
Many african cichlids are very active fish, but they can't be fed feeders.
The central and south american cichlids I mentioned above can eat feeder fish, and I'd say all of them are very active. Jack Dempseys can sometimes be shy I've heard, but mine sure isn't! Depends on what you like I'd say, and what you can find in your area. |
