| Hmmm, this is a bit confusing....
Tetris Tetra,
Are you talking about a good stocking for your 10 gallon tank that you have in your signature? I would think it to be an ok stocking, but like firefish lover hints at, gouramis can be a bit tempermental as well as 'nippy'. If you are talking about your 10 gallon tank, I might consider having less bottom dwelling fish as it may be hard for you to get enough food down there with 5 mid to top dwelling fish. I found this out myself and was basically forced to over feed in order to ensure proper ntrition until I could fix the problem.
KellKat,
I think that nearly any fish is good for children to watch, however, I believe you are looking for fish that are a bit more active and easy to breed?!?!? If this is the case, it would help to know what size tank you are working with and how the tank is set up (i.e. planted, substrate type, decor, etc...). I have had a 55 gallon live bearer tank in the past that I set up as a tank for my kids. I kept mollies and platties mainly, but also had a guppy and two apple snails (which was a mistake since these snails can quickly multiply out of control.). The mollies and platties were very quick to multiply and it became our family 'experiment' to see if we could breed a spacific coloration of mollies. We got very close to acheiving this goal before we moved and I took the tank down for space reasons. I am now looking into getting another 55 gallon tank for livebearers that I can plant as well.
Anyways, IMO and IME, livebearers are great fish for having kids and they are also pretty cheap to buy and feed as well as very forgiving as far as water quality, which helps if you plan to let your kids do the feeding as I did. 5, 6, and 9 year olds are very prone to overfeeding and cannot help but to feel bad for the fish when they look like they are hungry! |
