| definately don't get him a female to keep him company. One (probably her) will end up dead. Unless they are mating they can't stay in the same aquarium. You can get him a female to keep next to his bowl so he will strut around for her. As for the plants, I have used both, but in a betta bowl the live plants don't do well and dirty up the water quicker. The leaves fall off and you need to replace them alot. As for the gravel, I have some in regular gravel, one with glass beads. I don't think it really matters. Remenber that eventhough a betta can live in a bowl, it needs frequent water changes. |

| The gravel doesn't really matter. And I wouldn't bother putting any live plants in that size of a container. As for food, I would recomend betta bites, and for a treat every now and then maybe pick up some freeze dried shrimp (make sure they aren't too big for him though). And whenever you get a chance, I'd recommend replacing your betta bowl for an actual aquarium (doesn't have to be big, a 5 gal. would do just fine if you really wanna treat him like a king). |

| That's cool. I tried wysteria plants in my Betta bowl. It looked great for a while, but by the 3 water change it would be nothing but a few leaves on a stick. I really never put much thought into what the plant needed to thrive though, only the fish. We also had a traditional peace lilly in a vase with betta. I know alot of fish people hate that, but we always took the plant out each day to feed mr. betta. We did not try to make him eat the roots as some suggest. Also we did even more frequent water changes and removed any decaying roots to keep water clear. He seemed to like it fine. He lasted longer than the plant. He died because of some issue with a water change. I never really figured out what happened but I changed the water in all my betta bowls and all of them about died. I was able to save 1, who is still doing great, but lost the others. It had to be something in the water for it to hit all 3 the same right after a water change. Since then I only use bottled water and have not had any issues since. |

| You might find this helpful...
Even in these little tanks you need.
Light about the same intensity you would use on a 10 gallon
A Consistent Carbon Source. I use 1 ml of Seachem "Excel" daily. I think this is where you ran into problems.
The fish and food supply nutrients.
I also use a very small "palm filter" power filter for water clarity and a fixed temp under gravel heater.
