I want to replace my Whisper 40-60 with a Emporor 280. I have a 30gallone tank and i think the Whisper is doing a horrible job with filtration especially with the oxygen side. What will be the best way to replace this filter with the new one. Could I just sit the old filters in the new one for about a week>?

I think you are asking several different questions here.

I'm not clear on what you mean by...

The other question about putting the old filters in the new filter plays to a common misconception that the beneficial bacteria colonies exist only in the filter. Actually they are everywhere in the tank and changing your filter should make no difference,however, a slight spike in ammonia and nitrate is possible. If you are worried, you only need to cut a medium size piece and put it in the new filter.

The water should free fall into the tank corect not sit into the water so there really no room for the water to mix or make a water fall type spill out of the filter. Now if I dont fill the tank up and leave about 2 inches of water out it will do that but who wants to see a water line on the aquarium

Ahh! ...No, this is not accurate information. In order to have good O2 exchange, the surface of the water needs only mild agitation not a 2 inch drop and splashing.

Thanks for clearing that one up. I've read it somewhere that filter should not be totally removed or not washing it with untreated chlorinated water because it kills the beneficial bacteria.
