30 Gallon tank setup - Page 2

Hey Patrick,
It seems odd to have your nitrates at 0ppm with five fish in a 30 gallon tank. Have you ever seen your nitrates above 0ppm? Also, when are you testing your water quality? If you test right after a w/c, then try to test right before a w/c when your nitrates would be at their highest. It would be great to see some sort of level higher than 0 for those nitrates. How often do you feed your fish and how much of a serving size do you feed them? I am trying to get an understanding of how much of a source of ammonia is entering your tank before it is broken down to nitrates (hopefully). Hope for the best!

mabey 1ppm one time I change the water every Saturday. I feed them a pinch of food in the morning and again at night. The average size of the fish may be a little longer than an 1 inch. The algea eater is about 4 inches long he has grew really fast and got big in a short time

What about temperature? Check to see what it is during the day and then at night. Something seems to be stressing out the fish.

If you do not have any live plants in the tank, try to keep your lighting to a min. If your tank stays natural really dark during the day, then you have to turn your tank lights on. But if there is natural sunlight that lightens up your room as well as your tank then try to use that during the day and tank lights at night until you go to bed. This will make a diff. in keeping algae down. Make sure there is no direct sunlight that cast a beam onto your tank. Algae will grow quite fast on that scale. I keep my tank lights on for about 5 hours a day. 530 pm to about 1030 or so.

Hey cooltop,

I agree that it is strange to have no nitrAtes and/or ammonia at this point. I think there is a possibility that the meds might have killed off the beneficial bacteria.
Can you verify with another test?

And monitor carefully to see if fish are "gasping for air" or showing any signs of ammonia poisoning.

Frequent W/C can't hurt.

Hey Bob,

If there are fish present in there, which he said there is, they will create ammonia levels of some sort. So I'm sure that the ammonia would show up on a test, if it were present. Correct? I'm a salty guy and don't know much about Fresh.

Well the fish that had the ike finially died. So now I am back to my 4 original fish that I have had. The 1 tiger bard seem to be acting sick though he look straight down and floats some times but starts swimming normal after a while.
