| Dispose Filter? Hi
I'm really not sure which fourm this fits in. : P
My fishtank was recently infected with ICH and I put 2 teaspoons of salt in for every gallon. All my fish died expect for two and the two haven't showed any signs of it. I'm not sure if its gone, so I did a 100% water change. Do you think I would need to buy a new filter? Or should I just dry it out and it would be okay to use again?
Sorry if this doesn't make sense...

| Re: Dispose Filter? Sorry onefishtwofish I have no idea what you are talking about. I did not find a previous post describing a problem you were having. Are you maybe talking about Ich? Please provide some more info so we can try and help you with your question.

Sorry to hear about your loss. When you were adding the salt to the tank, did you add all of the salt at one sitting? If so, this could explain why the majority of the fish could not adapt to the sudden change in pH so quickly. The salt should be added in small amounts throughout a duration of 3 days or so. There is an article regarding the treatment of Ich on this site and I would highly recommend reading it. It will explain the correct process of treating Ich if this is what is infecting your tank. Since there are still two fish that are alive, I would treat the Ich in the main tank through the correct process and this will insure that no Ich will remain in your substrate and filter. Hopefully this helps you during this rough time, but Im sure someone else will comment on what their own views are. Good luck!

If I could just add some clarification here. Quote: |

| The technique is right on, the cause of death however is not pH change, it is osmotic. Without getting very technical about Osomoregulation and osmosis in living cells...a freshwater fish needs to adjust to high NaCl concentrations very gradually as rapid changes will cause all of the electrolytes and essential fluids to be sucked out of the cells. The fish implodes and death can sometimes be very rapid.

| Re: Dispose Filter? I would let the filter dry completely or just use a new one, cartridges are realatively cheap and its peace of mind. |

| Re: Dispose Filter? onefish, if you are asking just one question to keep the filter or not. Depending on your money situation, buying a new one is best. or clean the one you have with 1 part chlorox and 19 parts water. let it sit about 1/2 hour then rinse very very well. Dont try to clean the media, toss it out and get new one.
This is just IMO. Sometimes money is tight
