Re: Need some advice

something you should keep in mind when testing both tank and tap water:

there is ammonia which is toxic to fish and we see it when it shows up in a test.

There is also ammonium, which is ammonia's less toxic cousin, when ammonium is present, it will also show up on test kits as ammonia. Most of the time when we see a positive ammonia test directly from the tap it is really the cousin ammonium that is present.

The same can be said of tank water when it is tested AFTER adding an ammonia controlling product.

Ammonia removers work by converting the ammonia into ammonium but the test kits do not know the difference.

To help fish during this cycling process, in conjunction with water changes, you can add some aquarium salt to the tank. It helps with oxygen uptake and helps retard cellular degredation that comes with exposure to ammonia and nitrItes.

Hope this helps.
Regards,
Fern

Re: Need some advice

Yes, it is a new set up. Has been going for 4 weeks now. The tank is almost cycled. I don't have any ammonia and my nitrIte reading this morning was less than .25 but more than 0, that is down from 1.0.

So I am super excited. I had 1 fish die to ich and another die because of swim bladder. Overall, I think things are going really well. Can't wait to add my pleco.
