Well Gitmo died this morning. Also the 10 gallon tank cycled. My nitrate and nitrites are down to nothing. *sigh* Gary the snail is still alive over at my sister's house he is the only one to make it through this. I just couldn't bring Gitmo out of being sick.

I did vac the gravel day before yesterday in the 10 gallon and the tank cycled so we are established. Instead of Goldfish I think I am going to get a few catfish and just keep Gary.

Thanks for all the help. Even though I couldn't save Gitmo at least with help I got the 10 gallon cycled.

Sorry about the loss. With all of the updates, questions, and feedback, it almost seems as if we have also lost Gitmo.

Have you thought about some smaller tropical fish, such as guppies, mollies, platies? You might find that the tropical fish might be to your likeing. Also, have you considered a Betta in the tank? You could also invest a little more money, and purchase some lights and try for a planted tank.

So glad that you stuck with it, your perserverance means a lot to us out there. Please keep us updated as to what you are going to do next and how it is going.

I am sorry that things did not work out better for Gitmo. It does sound like the tank is ready to add a few fish. I would probably wait for one more zero reading on Ammonia and Nitrites (some Nitrate is not a problem - I run 30 or so usually). You will want to add fish slowly and if the ammonia or nitrites raise stop adding fish until the bacteria catches up. I also think Red Barron's advice on considering tropical fish is worth at least pondering. Tropical fish are going to give you a bit more color, compatible temperature schemes, and typically not produce as much waste as a gold fish. A beta can be a really interesting fish in a community tank (they are fine in there too - regardless of what some people will tell you). I would encourage you to keep hanging in there and stock the tank. i think you will see a much better result now.
