I've been keeping a 30g fw tank for years, but have always had problems with ph. Tried using Seachem nertral regulator but it never gets below apx 7.3 Otherwise water quality is good. Weekly water changes of about 20%. I've always kept mostly tetras with limited success. I've been told I might try African cichlids. What do you think?

I'm not clear, after reading your post, what the question is.

A pH of 7.2 is just fine for the majority of aquarium hobby fish.

I am also not clear on what "limited success" means.

What is the pH of your tank if you do not add buffering chemicals?

By "limited success" I mean that alot of fish don't survive very long. I start with maybe seven or nine small tetras and within about ten days it's down to two or three. Those last survivors then live on for years. I use ph 7.0 Seachem Neutral Regulator. Should I use or add anything else?
Also, are most aquarium fish now captive bred, or are many still wild caught? Which species are produced by breeders? I appreciate your reply and hope you'll indulge what you may regard as some novice queries. K.

No problem with the questions

Could you give us a set of your tank paramaters: Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, GH, KH, Phosphate etc.

And a Set of Tap water paramaters. These will help us a lot with future questions

Water change amount and frequency.

Other chemicals you add.

To answer your question yes lots of common aquarium fish are farm raised.
Your lfs should be able to tell you.

I would like to see both sets of numbers before speculating on fish deaths>
