Hello, I am new to the world of fish, escept for an occasional trip to Red Lobster, . I have a tank which is built in between two rooms, it was custom ordered to fit the wall and is 175 gallons. I inheritted the tank when I divorced two years ago. I have three fish, 4" angel - ghost knife - alge eater. All I have done is feed the fish, I did add water once and clean the filter once. The tank is about three inches low of water at this time and I know it needs attention, what is the best action to get back on a routine schedule so I do not do too much to fast to hurt the fish. Actually the fish are doing fine at this time and the tank is not looking too bad taking in account the lack of attention it has received. I live in a small town, the pet/fish store employees have not been any help and only suggest that I buy all the chemicals they sell. Thanks for the help.

Wow a 175 gallon tank with just three fish. Either the tank is actually smaller than 175 or you have plenty of room for more fish.
You can top off the water by adding tapwater that has been dechlorinated.
It might be a good to change some of the tank water if it has never been done. Also what do you have for filtration on the tank?

If the tank is low because of evaporation, I would remove about 10-20% of the water (use a hose and siphon it to outside or a sink - or use a gravel cleaner and get some of the gunk off the bottom) and fill it back to the top with tap water. It sounds like you otherwise have a pretty stable tank - so don't mess with anything else. Just clean out the filter media when the water output starts to diminish and keep the tank temp around 78-80F. You can probably add 5-10 more angelfish and have a nice display - they may even pair off and breed if the conditions are good.

Another great use for all that water is to water any plants you might have. Fish poop makes for excellent fertilizer!
