| Wacky Ammonia So after having trouble at first, I stabilized my ammonia to zero. I have been adding new fish slowly. Right now I have 14 fish. Which is I know.. A lot, between my boyfriend "surprising" me with a fish every week, and my sister pawning off fish she doesn't want on me, I've got quite a few too soon, which I realize could have contributed to my tank having high ammonia at the moment. Here's what I have:
3 guppies (1 male, two female)
3 endlers livebearers (not sure of sex?)
2 swordtail fish (1 male, 1 female)
3 rosy barbs (unsure of sex)
1 LARGE cory (I mean he is huge. 3 yrs old)
1 rainbow shark (unsure of sex)
1 flame gourami (unsure of sex)
14 fish all together.
The guppies, and endlers livebearers will be moved to another tank as soon as I get another one, I am leaning towards a semi-aggressive tank. Right now my levels are:
Ammonia : 1.2
Nitrite: Barely pink..So between 0-0.3 but like I said..just a little hint of pink
Nitrates: 5, they were around 15 yesterday so I did a water change, I don't think the water change could have affected my levels, but my ammonia was fine yesterday before I changed the water. For the records, my tank is a 27 gallon.
Another question: The filter. Right now I am using store bought filter catridges, they have carbon on one side and like a blue foamy kind of thing on the other side. I have heard negative comments, what else could I use for filtering? I didn't realize there were other options. I'm running a penguin 175 with a biowheel. Will switching my cartridges mess up my levels even more? Ah I am totally ignorant. I thought I knew a lot when I started, but alas. I don't know who to trust and people keep boggling me with their suggestions and such. Any help at all would be appreciated. |
