Basicly I feel trapped and I'm getting ready to off the fish and drain the tank.
I started the tank out on the right foot, adding water, treating it, letting the tank run for 2-3 days w/o fish.
After that, I added 3 zebra danios, fed them twice a day (first at 6am, last at 10pm) only what they would eat in a few minutes (sometimes underfeeding them imo) tested my water every 2-3 days via Petsmart (local chain pet store).
After getting some mixed test results from my lfs I got my own master kit from API to test ammonia, nitrite, rate and, ph.
My ammonia has never gotten higher then 2.0 (I do a 6-9 gallon water change when it gets this high).
My nitrites have never gotten higher then .25 and my nitrates have never gotten higher then 50.
What has me at wits end is my tap water. Testing it before treating it I get a reading of 1.0 ammonia, 1.0 ish chlorine, 0 nitrite and 20 nitrate.
Treating it with Prime takes care of the chlorine but does nothing for the ammonia like it says it does. Treating it with Amquel (not plus) has the same effects even when extremely over dosing both products.
I do once-twice a week water changes of 6-9 gallons but I dont think its helping anything. I take out water that has 2ppm ammonia just to add 1ppm back to it. I take out roughtly 30-50ppm nitrite just to add back 20ppm.
I just dont know what to do. |
