Qwic question on dechlorinating water

ok so my situation is that i need to do a water change right....
now i normally just grabb my 28g bucket in advance.. fill it up and let it age a day...ok
now im having issues with roommates about keeping a bucket of water out about..
so to defuse the problem i set out and purchased some dechlorinating tablets
now heres my questions......
why is it when i placed one tablet in the bucket of water...the water turned blue in a matter of seconds.......
i didnt want to turn my whole tank blue...so i left it out and replaced the water with bottled water as a temp fix.....
not sure if that blue water in large amounts is safe

what brand tablets have you used? usually the liquid is a lot more reliable.
what kind of fishtank to you have? (size)
how many fish, what kind of fish?

Try the product Prime. It seems to work well, and its more concentrated than the other brands I've used, which for me means that it lasts longer.

The blue is usually methylene blue, a bacteriostatic dye that's used to try and kill some types of bacteria and identify fungused eggs in other uses. It'll be filtered out by carbon quickly but I prefer the one drop per gallon or two options like Prime and Genesis.

Oh ok thankx that explains the blue coloring.....
im currently using tablets from jungle fish care....do you know if the tablets that im using will wipeout traces of the good bacteria that the tank neededs.....and also the two other brands you recommended.. do they also come in tablet form......thankx again

The products recommended by BJP will have little impact on your beneficial bacteria.

I don't believe Prime by Seachem and Genesis by Aquarium Products contain any methylene blue. The product you're using now by Jungle Labs shouldn't conatin enough meth blue to harm your bacteria bed. I haven't used it though so check the fine print on the packaging. If it's asking for doses of a bacterial suppliment at the same time then it might.

The blue shouldn't be as pronounced once you're in a pattern of doing partial water changes since you'll then be dilluting it by the percentage of water left in the tank.

You should just purchase some liquid de-cholorinator like Tetraaqua Aquasafe- it can be found very easily, is affordable and all you do is put in the reccomended dose to your tap water that is in a bucket and then pour it into the tank. Just be sure that once you add it to the tap water, mix it in real well and make sure that the water is close or exact to the existing water temperature in the tank.

oh ok thanks because i wasnt able to get my hands on the prime that i was recommended by the other members.... and my local wal mart only offer jungle tablets and the product you mentioned....... thankx
