| Live plants can increase water quality slightly but not as much as good husbandry efforts like weekly 10% water changes. However, it my opinion that live plant are more aesthetically beneficial than plastic plants, and I think our tank's inhabitant's appreciate the quality attention. Plus, plastic plants can, in some cases, be a source or phosphate which fuels the growth of nuisance algae. However, I still would not dissuade anyone from opting to decorate their aquarium with a forest of plastic plants. After all, its the cover for your fish that is provided that makes the most difference. If your inhabitants are happy, then that should speak volumes. Especially when weighed with the fact that keeping live plants requires you to not only provide for the animal's need's, but also for that of the plants in the aquarium who need the correct spectrum of light for photosynthesis, iron for growth and color, and carbon dioxide to breathe. |
