I found one of my panda cory cats dead last night and found out that the nitrite level is extremely high. I got did a 50 percent water change, vacumed the gravel and added in some bacteria. The nitrite is still really high and i dont know what to do!!!!!!!

how big is the tank ?
what fish are in the tank?
how many fish are in the tank?
did you cycle the tank?
have you made any huge additions to the tank, such as adding 4+ fish at a time ?
go to the LFS and bring a bottle of water tell them to test your water

I have a 10 gallon tank with 3 red eye tetras, 3 glo-lite tetras, 1 angelfish - (will return when gets too big) and now 1 panda cory cat. I think where i went wrong was the cycling, i was never told buy my LFS that i needed to cycle it for a month and only add in 1 or 2 fish at a time. The place where i got my advice and fish from is a little shop that only deals with fish and aquariums. They said it would be fine to add in 6 fish at a time. So they basically screwed me over.

yeah pretty much .. go down there and tell them to test your water ..
you want 0 ammonia
0 nitrItes
and 10-30 nitrates (with your fish you shoudl have somewhere around here)
and a ph +/- 7

if you dont have anything close to these readings, iw ould return all the fish and get your money back .. your fish will shortly die if your tank isnt cycled, for now, add some aquarium salt to the tank
