| Re: is this a good combo From what I have learned by reading this forum, I'd say that is a little heavy for a ten gallon. I think they say to figure one fish inch per gallon. For example, I have a 4" black shark, so I count 4 gallons of my 30 gallon tank for him.
My 30 is plenty full, so I added another HOB filter on the back and have a bubble line, and try to do weekly water changes. I am planing on build a stand for my 50 gallon and moving my black shark to it when it is ready to go. |

| Re: is this a good combo you might be able to get away with your 10 gallon setup, as the fish you have dont produce as much waste as larger fish ..
but yonzfamily,
you were correct on the inch per fish rule, but your bala shark is going to become a lot bigger .. so you have to rule out how big hes gunna be when he gets older, and count that in, now how big he is currently

| Re: is this a good combo I personally thing that's two many fish for that tank, however depends on what filtration you have etc. Also I would like to add, guppies, are breeders.. so you'll have more in the future

| Re: is this a good combo I use the 1" per gallon on more of the filter. I use a 20 gallon filter on my 10 gallon. If you do that, you will be great. Just make sure to test your water alot and make sure. I have 9 fish in my 10 gallon but a large filter.

| Re: is this a good combo Hey all!
While I realize that this thread is getting a bit old and I dont really want to bury any new threads, I wanted to point out that the 'inch per gallon' rule or guideline does have some serious limitations to it, and bala sharks would be excluded. You can read more about the 'inch per gallon rule' by clicking HERE if you are interested.
I also want to point out that the idea a bigger filter will reduce the need for water changes is 'half-baked' IMHO. The sort of filtration that you are speaking about here does not remove nitrates so, while I agree that it is a great idea to over-filter a tank, it doesnt solve everything and one still needs to monitor water parameters and perform water changes based upon test results...at least when a tank is first becoming established, and if/when the stocking of a tank changes, among a couple others I am sure I am missing.
However, and a planted tank enthusiast can correct me if I am wrong here, the fact that you have a plant in your 10 gallon kylepriest, may actually be your saving grace here since it will benifit from the nitrates in your tank, and your fish will then benifit as those nitrates are removed. |
