wow, great responses!
i've removed all the visible snails from the tank and if they snails make a resurgence i'll definitely try the salt shaker method of removal.
i have also purchased a water tester and found everything to be in order (except the nitrates are a little low and the nitrites a little high).
i was also pleased to see that my new bamboo shrimp get along very well with my skittish ghost catfish. who'd'a thunk!?
