| Lighting question Hi guys,i was looking for that light fixture that would be good for my tank on the Foster& Smith website.I found the Dual Satellite Compact Flourescent Fixture(bcause mine doesnt have a fan,& i think u need a fan for 130 watts).I need the 36" Fixture, but on the description it says that i should not place it under a glass canopy which i have, and it would be over open water. Is it for safety reasons? Do u have any suggestions? The Fixture i have now is enclosed in glass, but its a single strip. Thanks alot!

| Re: Lighting question Fishobsessed,
Like GM, I prefer to have something between my lights and my freshwater tanks....if not for anything but to help with evaporation, but I have also almost knocked a light fixture into my tanks a few times and that small bit of glass or acrylic saved my, and my fish. Ironically, I just picked up some new acrylic sheets for my up and coming 125 salty tank at Home Depot. I was picking up 3/16th inch sheets of low-glare acrylic for about $5.99. Without looking, I know that they are larger than 16.5" X 20" because that is what I just cut them down to. For ease of feeding and whatever, I just cut the middle section so that there is a 5 or 6 inch area of open water, with the acylic under the light set only. IMHO, it is a precaution that can really save you a lot, even if you have your lights on legs or off the top of the tank some how. |

| Re: Lighting question I have ran lights over open tops with no problems. You just have be a little more cautious about them. Make sure to get a ground fault plug for the lights so in the case they do fall in you and the fish wont fry to death. |
