I am putting water in everyother day. what can i do to decrease this and is this normal.

Do you have a top on your tank? If not that would explain it.

You can buy one from a larger fish store or make one yourself out of plexi glass or go to a glass place and have them cut you a real glass one.

Plexi has been known to warp a little when used as a top but its worth not needing to worry about dropping a gigantic glass pannel on the gound.

Also you can cut plexi yourself incase you need to modify it later

Or you can just buy a prettier one if ones available to you, or order it.

also remember that the higher the water temperature the more evaporation will occur so if you have ultra tropicals (83-87 degree water) then you will need to fill up more than if you have goldfish

Welcome to the forum

You will get a lot of evaporation this time of year in some areas. Heating systems tend to take moisture out of the air and the have very dry air. It wants sdome moisture so it pulls from your tank. I would just keep filling it up mostly. If you do not have a lid that is worth doing too for a number of reasons

Just wanted to say hi more than anything else...I agree with everyone so far. In my house, the heater takes nearly all the moisture out of the air...so much that my wife and step daughter are constantly using lotion and complaining about the dryness. I can see the difference in my tanks as well and having to top off tanks more frequently. Glass tops help out a bunch for me.

For a salt water tank, where limewater is used to maintain calcium and alkalinity, more evaporation is a good thing. I use fans to increase the evaporation so I can dose more limewater. I average a little over 5g a day top up.

Then you definitly dont want a lid as it might crack(heat) or warp(acrylic). I lose about 4 gallons a day on my tank, I currently have it setup with an auto topoff unit from a holding container. I will eventually have the holding cotainer with an auto top off from my r/o unit. Just waiting to finish the laundry room where the r/o unit will be housed.
