Input needed!

hi guys, I am looking for a new filter and heater for 55 gal cichlids. I'm thinking its time for a canister filter - any suggestions which one? Also, what are your preferences for heaters? I see canisters ranging from 100 dollars up - would like maybe a mid-range priced one not a crazy priced!

Also, thinking of going to sand from gravel?

I have three Rena FillStar canisters. They provide excellent filtration, are quiet, and are moderately priced.

I too have two renas and like them very much, easy to maintain, easy to adapt filter media needs specific to my tanks, includes a spray bar with flow rate control.

As for heaters. Several months ago, I purchased two stealth heaters by Marineland which are black plastic as opposed to glass. In the past I have had problems with accuracy......e.g. heater set to 78 but really heats to 86......so far these seem to be a little more accurate....I think I have it set at 72-74 and it (they, I have two in my 125) keep it around 78.

Best of all it is a good price compared to many other brands....I'm sure those that use others are just as satisfied with how their brand works.....

No experience with sand.....always had gravel with laterite for my plants, but I would think it would be easier to vacuum gravel than sand.

+1 for the rena and the stealth heater...I actually don't have one but have heard some good things about them.

I've always been a little curious about the sand thing.....what do you have to do differently when it comes to vacuuming.....it seems like the lightness of the sand would draw more up into the tube.....also, what would be the benefits and/or down side of going sand versus gravel.

For vacuuming you can either hold the vac like an inch above the sand or (what i do) I just vacuum like normal except pinch the tube so that it doesn't have much suction. Sand vs. Gravel.....I use sand bc it is essentially crushed coral and will buffer the ph (good for cichlids) and well it just plain looks cool!
