As for heaters. Several months ago, I purchased two stealth heaters by Marineland which are black plastic as opposed to glass. In the past I have had problems with accuracy......e.g. heater set to 78 but really heats to 86......so far these seem to be a little more accurate....I think I have it set at 72-74 and it (they, I have two in my 125) keep it around 78.
Best of all it is a good price compared to many other brands....I'm sure those that use others are just as satisfied with how their brand works.....
No experience with sand.....always had gravel with laterite for my plants, but I would think it would be easier to vacuum gravel than sand.
