Re: cinder block stand

You would need 3 towers (2 for the sides & 1 in the middle) and most likely 18 bricks. I dont think you will get/need more than 2 bricks side by side for each tower and 3 or 4 bricks high should be plenty tall enough. You could go one step further and use liquid nails to glue them all together but the weight of the tank should be fine.

Re: cinder block stand

Never tought about the liquid nails. So 6 piles? 2 on each end and 2 in the middle?

Re: cinder block stand

No 3 total. 1 for each end and 1 for the middle.

It depends on what you are looking for though. Making a [ on each end might look nicer. (like this [ l ] ) Personally I would make a wall all the way around the tank except for two openings in the front which will be for access to the filters and stuff. ( [_____l_____] )

As long as there is 3 lines of support you should be fine. You may also want to get a few more bricks so you could place a shelf under the tank.

Re: cinder block stand

Cinder blocks have their most strength when stacked with the holes vertical. They are surprisingly weak in other configurations.

Re: cinder block stand

What a great idea, even i can do this. got some questions What kind of wood? how thick? sticking out past the ends ok? the prices of stands are way out of my budget, i will not pay 4-5 hundred bucks for a stand. (im old, and cheap) i can buy a couple of blocks at a time and carry them in, when i feel strong. then get a couple more the next time. wheeeeeeee

2 vertical blocks one on top of the other, evenly spaced, with a hard wood top. if 3 high, then liquid nail around the top of the first two?

I hear ya on the price of the stands! The brick needs to be layed out just like you see on a building except you wont have to overlap each row. If its vertical it wont be as stable and will not hold nearly as much weight. As far as wood goes you can use 2x4's if you want them to slide into the holes.

So it get's stacked like this _ _ instead of like this I I.

Re: cinder block stand

i've got a temporary cinder block stand for my 38g right now. i have mine (much smaller than yours of course) on two pillars with a 1/2" plank of wood and a nice cloth cover that actually matches the color of the wall so it's not that bad looking...it'll work, that's for sure:-)
good luck with it
