Re: DIY Sump/Refugium Project

This may be a dumn question for you all but why does the sump need to have the two side by side pannels with one an inch or so from the bottom? This must have a particular purpose? But it also looks like its creating lots of bubbles. Mainly, WHERE CAN I GET PRE-CUT GLASS? I've looked everywhere. Thanks alot, im just now setting my first coral tank.

Re: DIY Sump/Refugium Project

Its main purpose is to slow down the flow. In my refugium I decide not to put another piece to make it three pieces and flow over the top, I will eventually do this when I replace the return pump. I got my glass cut from a glass shop.

Re: DIY Sump/Refugium Project

Gary, I have a question. How big did you make your glass cuts for dividing your sump? I know I dont want to make them too high. I want to leave room in the sump in case of a power outage, correct? I want to get my sump made this week.

So heres what I am thinking. I'm doing a 8'' Fuge, 10.5'' skimmer, 3-1'' baffles to return, and then a 8'' return. Got all that?

Now for the baffles. I would use a 6'' high glass baffle for the fuge. A 5'' first baffle towards the return, then a 8'' baffle one inch from the bottom, then another 5''. Could I go higher than that?

My main reasoning behind all this is just in case of a power outage, I want the sump to handle some water until it goes below the over flow box. Thanks Gary!

I based my refugium area on the depth of the area that my skimmer sits in. The manufacturer of my skimmer recommended 6" of water for the best performance, so the refugium area is 6 1/4". you can go taller, I just didnt want alot of turbulance from the water coming in from the refugium.
I think this is the answer you are looking for right?

Re: DIY Sump/Refugium Project

That is what I wanted to hear. I wrote the people at ASM to see if they can give me a recommended depth for the G-1 I will use. Thanks Gary! More questions to come Im sure!

When you get a chance can you PM me(or post it here) your way of drilling a 1'' bulkhead in my 20g long tank? I will definately be using an enternal return pump. (Quiet One 4000, 1,000gph)

Thanks
