Filter comparison questions...

I have a 20 long freshwater semi -planted community tank. For a filter I have a Tetra whisper 40. Its GPH rate is 210. I was offered a Rena canister filter, an XP2. It's PH rate is 300.
Now my question is this, is my whisper filter ok, or should I upgrade? Can you have too much filtration?(the Rena is for up to 75 gallons) What would be the benefits of using the canister as opposed to the whisper? Thanx!!!

Just my $.02

More filtration is always a good thing, hard to overdo.

Better water circulation from the return system on the Rena.

More options for different filter media.

More efficient filtration.

Needs cleaning less often.

Less stuff hanging off the tank.

They can be used for in-line CO2, UV etc. without investing in pumps.

Rena canisters are of good quality...I run two on my 75, a II and a III. The III is five years old and is still like new.

I also use a small HOB with an Eheim surface skimmer. Unless you have a lot of surface agitation, to dissolve it, canister filters are of little help dealing with protein slicks on the surface.

I was looking through Skymall, I found a pretty cool filter. Says that you never have to change the water in the tank again. It's called The Zero Water Exchange System from Hiq or hiq-usa, something like that.

Well, JMHO but if it sounds too good to be true it is. I cannot imagine never having to do water changes. If for no other reason beneficial nutrients are used up and replaced by adding new salt water. Just because a "super filter" can allegedly keep bad things from rising in your water does not negate the fact that your watery friends are not using up nutrients, especially your corals. Again, just my .02.

You bet. Selling newcomers stuff they do not need is really big bucks business.

I think the original thread question was about freshwater tanks, but the principals are the same.

Jay

Sorry, you're correct. Not too many corals hang around in fresh water..oops! Like you said though, same principles.
