More filtration is always a good thing, hard to overdo.
Better water circulation from the return system on the Rena.
More options for different filter media.
More efficient filtration.
Needs cleaning less often.
Less stuff hanging off the tank.
They can be used for in-line CO2, UV etc. without investing in pumps.
Rena canisters are of good quality...I run two on my 75, a II and a III. The III is five years old and is still like new.
I also use a small HOB with an Eheim surface skimmer. Unless you have a lot of surface agitation, to dissolve it, canister filters are of little help dealing with protein slicks on the surface.
