White eyes?

So I just did a water change about a week ago. It's a 55 gallon tank full of tetras. Now it seems like they have white, puffy eyes. It might effect one eye, both or none on various fish. I'm quite confused as to what it could be. One of the larger tetras has puffy white stuff on his one fin, but not a lot. The PH, Ammonia and Nitrate levels are normal. The water is clear. The filter is more then likely due for a change, but over all nothing out of the ordinary. What could it be?

Re: White eyes?

Hey Tetra - sorry to hear about your troubles.

First, I would probably look a little deeper into the "puffy white stuff" on that one tetra since ignoring it could lead to bigger, less-reversable problems. Since it is on the fin, my guess would be a fungal infection...but that is only a guess and not a very well informed guess either.

As far as I know, cloudy eyes can be a symptom of at least a few problems with a bacterial infection, a dietary issue, and the fish being subjected to an extreme amount of light being the three that I can think of right now.

Obviously this presents a small problem...since you don't know what could be the cause of the problem or really even know what the problem is, it might be risky to go running to the medicine aisle of your LFS right away. That being said, I would probably investigate and/or address the possible lighting issue and the dietary issue since they are the least invasive measures you can take while you continue monitoring the fish closely. As far as the diet goes, you might gain a lot of benifit from something as simple as feeding your fish flake foods that are manufactured by different companies since one might be lacking something another brand has. Of course, you can also go beyond that by offering more than flake food; including frozen foods. In reality, so long as the food is something your fish can/will eat, I am not sure if there is such a thing as "too much variety" in a diet. In fact, you might also want to look into the benifits of garlic as well.

Otherwise, you might have a problem that quarantining fish won't help all that much and hence, need to treat your display tank as a whole. Of course, making sure that your fish are as healthy as possible is going to be the foundation of solving any illness
