| Eye fungus Hello hello,
I'm sure there are many a thread on fungus and the best way to cure it and I will do research tomorrow, right now it is late though and i just have one quick question. I have a female platy with some fungus on her eye. I noticed it a few days ago, but i know on of the best ways to get rid of diseases is pristine water, so I did a water change and kept an eye on her. The fungus looked like it was getting better yesterday but today it looks worse. I gently removed her from the tank and put her in my Bettas old 2 gallon home with a small filter and some extra anachris that i pulled from my 20g (her home) I added a teeny bit of fungus cure.
My question: is this an ok option? or would i be better off putting her back in the 20 where she came from?
Thanks in advance! |

| Re: Eye fungus Well I tried to do a little research on fungus's and what not but there's SO much information, the only thing I came across that i had never heard was a thread on disease cures and using H202 (hydrogen peroxide) as an anti-fungal? does anyone know anything about this? and how effective it is? and how to do it?
Also, here's a couple pictures of her eye. I'll try to get a better one later....it looks like she's got a loose scale on her upper side (the lower one is a white spot)
thanks! |

| Re: Eye fungus My platys seem to be fungussy again. The one that was really fungussy on the eye has fungus thee again, the other seems to have gotten fungus on his lip, and maybe starting in the eye again, and the third one has seemed lethargic, sitting on the bottom a lot, so i've isolated all 3 (i'll be doing LOTS of water changes to keep the ammonia down). I put them in the 1+gallon tank i used last time (might be time to upgrade my iso tank) this time i was equipped with PimaFix, so i dosed with that as well as some extra salt.
Everyone else in the tank looks happy and healthy with no sign of disease, tank parameters are normal, aside from a slightly low, but stable pH. (by normal i mean ammonia = 0, nitrIte = 0, nitrAte ~15, pH ~6.0) Perhaps i caught it too late last time and they just can't fight it off?
I'll keep an eye on them and see if i can't get them healthy again. It might be time to run to PetSmart and grab a 10g tank and filter to use as a hospital tank.....or to upgrade my 5g and use the 5 as the hospital tank...heeheehee __________________ |

| Re: Eye fungus I dont know what to recomend for the eye's but IMO I would upgreade the 5 to a ten and use a 5 as QT Fish will enjoy the biggertank right? Although you better be careful that it isnt free fish day our you might be tempted to fill both tanks and still be putting QT's in 1 gallon lol. I hope your fish do well soon.
also general advice in the forum leads me to think maybe they should be QT'd for a bit longer this time since it came back and you wouldnt want it to spread. Only that one type/breed is currently showing signs right and the same type as the last time?

| Re: Eye fungus Hahaha i know! I definitely can't go shopping for a new QT tank on a sunday!!! I have a bit of reorganizing to do in my room, and then i'll see if i have a spot to put the fish in a 10g
Yeah, I had them in QT for quite a while, for about a week after i thought i didn't see any more signs of fungus, but i guess it wasn't long enough. Ah well. And it's not just the same kind of fish, it's the same 2 fish, and the 3rd is the same species, that one seems much less lethargic in the QT tank...maybe that one was just getting picked on.
Thanks for the input and good wishes, unfortunately I did lose one during the day today... I think the water might have gotten too cold since the temperature dropped a lot today, time to go purchase a heater for the little tank if i can find one small enough i think. |

| Re: Eye fungus I'm sorry to hear about your loss! These things do happen though occasionally, i wouldn't worry tooo much about it yet. Good luck! |

| Re: Eye fungus Alas, my more aggressive treatment did not work, it was either too aggressive, the water was too cold, or the funugs just got the best of my platys, or some combination thereof. Thanks for the help and encouragement, but you have ot take the good with the bad in this hobby i guess. THe hardest part is losing fish, but i've been keeping fish long enough to know that it is inevitable that we will lose some. At least everyone else in the main tank still seems to be doing well. |
