Angry Fish TB

I am soooo upset and need to vent a little. I went to a LFS that is the only one around, right now, that sells fresh water flounders and long-finned gold zebra danios. I was very interested in buying these but I usually look at the fish I want for a few days even weeks before I buy them, I like to research them and make sure it is what I want before bringing it home and being a little less thrilled with it since your kinda stuck with it after that. This LFS has a 2 day 100% money back garantee and 4 day 50% money back garantee, you also have to bring a sample of your water in and it can't have any levels that are off even the slightest bit or no refund or replacement. In saying this, I like to make sure I get a "good" fish since there isn't much room for error. My first experience was buying 4 long-finned danios. The LFS tank was so over stocked, I can't even describe how overstocked, not by a few but a LOT. I asked the guy to pull out some of the fish and let me look at them in the little holders they hang on the sides of the tanks, he said no. I really wanted the danios so I told him what I was looking for and that he could pick them out but I wanted to o.k. each one he pulled out. This apparently was satisfactory to both of us at the time. I got what I wanted and got out of there feeling very weird and not very well taken care of as a customer. Two months later I go in with my husband and ask them to pull out 2 freshwater flounders from a tank that had very few fish in it, again no. I told the guy I wanted him to pull them out because the danios I bought a few months prior looked bad now (the ones in their tank, not mine). The LFS guy got very mad about my opinion of his fish and swore at me. My husband got very upset and asked for the manager who did nothing. Needless to say we walked out without a flounder. Now I've vented, thanks for reading! My long-finned gold zebra danio died today. It started acting odd, not swimming as much and then eventualy laying on the bottom of the tank. It got a crook in its spine, my husband described it as shrugging and looking unhappy. My question is, what is fish TB and how do you cure it? I was told thats probably what my fish had. That second trip to the LFS for the flounder revealed danios that had the same look mine now did and more than half of them were gone. Still the tank was incredibly over crowded. No more gold ones to be found, could they be more infectable with this fish TB? Could this be something else? The other three in my tank seem to be o.k.(cross my fingers). I assume this is spreadable and not a born with kind of thing? How do I prevent the other fish from getting this?

Re: Fish TB

sorry to hear about your troubles. I think you are having fish tb in that case you need to put all you fish in a hospital tank and wear gloves and empty your aquarium carefully because fish tb can be passed on to humans and rinse everything with chlorine

Re: Fish TB

A couple things. I would encourage you run a google search and do some research on fish TB. It is a bacterial disease and ius fairly difficult to treat. It is also not that common either so I would examine all alternatives as well. Also in response to the comment about humans catching it, take a look at Jay's comment on the other thread. I have never heard of a human getting infected with TB from a fish. TB in humans is very rare these days and if it was easily contracted from animals I do not think it would be virtually non existent. I should also mention that a friend of mine is the head of an HR department where a case of human TB was encountered and even there it is not nearly as contagious and untreatable as it was years ago. A QT tank is generally a good idea but in this case I do not think it is warranted.

Get a grip folks...this is a subject of epic misunderstanding, urban legend, nonsense, the sky is falling chicken little, the sky is falling!!! we will all be wiped out by this plague. WOW!!!

Wash you hands after cleaning or working on your tank or being in a room full of people, or around food etc. Use your common sense

Regards,
Jay

Re: Fish TB

In all fairness to the people who posted on this thread I don't think anyone said the sky is falling. We come here to share and occassionally ask for help.
Please be nice to us. We are concerned for our fish.
Jay we do wash our hands when we are finished with our fish and most of us are adults. Please be nice to us because we appreciate your wisdom when it comes to raising our scaly friends. Thanks for all the help that you provide on this fourm. Susan

Re: Fish TB

I'm sorry if you took my remarks as being unkind, I certainly did not intend for them to be.

If you look around you will find threads on fish TB
that are so full of misinformation they are truly scary. Like the post in this thread claiming as fact that fish TB can be passed to humans.

As Loman points out...there is no way a hobbyist could diagnose fish TB without being able to culture the bacteria and do a positive identification. Secondly the bacterial problem know as fish TB has no relationship to human TB.

This is an urban myth, founded on half truths.

Can you get a bacterial infection from an aquarium? YOU SURE CAN...just like you can pick up bugs from the office, shaking hands with friends who have a cold etc. etc. Working in the aquarium with cuts on your fingers or arms. The universal precaution is to wash your hands and use hand sanitizers.

Re: Fish TB

Thanks Jay, I am new in fish world but not in the human. I work with street people and come in contact with people that have varing kind of disease.
We can not learn enough about universal precautions.
I also believe that the moderators on this form are very carefull before they give their opinions and make sure that we know they are opinions. That is why I spend my time here.
So please people when giving advice make sure you can reference it. Other wise tell people it's just an opinion and they should continue to seek more advice.
I continue to believe FTF is the BEST!
