Hole N The Head (HITH)

Sorry for running this post in the wrong Area!!! I have three oscars and they seem to be coming down with pin holes in theor heads (HITH). These fish are known to get this and from what i read on the net it's really trickie with south American cichlids. But i performed a 25% water change on 7/20/07 and removed the carbon from my filters, I also added Jungle Hole N Head Guard. So if anyone else out their has had a similar problem, please share what information you have.

125 gallon
2 x power heads 402
2 x rena Xp3
2 x air bubbles strips
3 x oscars
1 pleco

Ammo: 0 ppm
Nitrate: 20 ppm
Nitrite : 0 ppm
Hardness: 120 ppm

Re: Hole N The Head (HITH)

In your case corbettfan, especially since you are seeing this problem on an Oscar, you need to be careful with your diagnosis because there is also another, easy to confuse, issue called Hexamita...which is similar in appearance to hole in the head, but is caused by a parasite (protozoa, like Ich) rather than the lack of certain dietary elements or water quality issues which surround HITH. However, luckily you can treat for both at the same time in most cases, but to be very honest, the best 'cure' for hole in the head is to take measures to prevent it in the first place (see my sig).

Thanks for that information Guns, but I never have this problem before I changed tanks back on June 22. So I'm just trying to get a grip on this before I lose my monters!
