Something smells FISHY!!!

I got a fish from the pet store a few months ago and it started off life with problems. When I brought it home the next day it had ich. I got rid of the ich and fin rot appeared the day after I got rid of the ich.

Now a new problem has arisen and I'm not quite sure what it is. I put in a quarantined fish that proved to be healthy maybe even a little too healthy. HE started bullying the other one. He was swimming with difficulty after I gravel vacumed the tank and the fish had stopped bullying him (at least not when I was around). So I decided to watch this tank because I thought the bullying had subsided two night's later decided to watch well this particular tank ate (I have more than one tank. I was majorly wrong this partcular fish when I wasn't watching would eat up all the food and than after keeping the now sick fish at bay chase him away well biting the under fins. After seeing this I had had enough and realized it probably wasn't the new plants from the pet sotre and really the fact he was being bullied. So I removed the fish bakc to my quarantine tank where he shall remain for a while. Now instead of swimming with clamped fins together which I noticed when the bully was in the tank. This morning he was sitting right side up on the gravel with the fins clamped together. I don't see the scales protruding so it's not dropsy. I managed to give him some peas incase it was bloat. What is causing him to act sick all of the sudden and has made his fins become clamped together. Is it the fact he was bullied? The new plants that brought in a disease? Any ideas what could be causing his distress and any thoughts of what disease could be causing it. The only visible thing that he is displaying showing that is has a problem is the clamped together fins and the ocassional decision of his to sit on the bottom.

P.S. If you need any more info. I have no way of providing a photo, but I will answer all question and FYI, he is a serasa comet.

An update is that one of the gills is now colapsed. This occured two days after these signs.

in your QT tank is there an airstone ? he is probably really scared at the moment, after being bullied and sick, now hes in a new home .. try and make it as comfortable as possible, with caves and places to hide


also .. is your quarantine tank fully cycled?

He isn't in a quarantine tank. I removed the bully to one of my other tanks where he has no one else to pick on and currently I am nursing the hurt one because to begin with it was only those two alone. His colapsed gill has reopened I am please to say that this occured this evening. I did a gravel vacuum. In his stressed state though I hate to say I think he contracted a fungus of some type so he's got some Jungle medication in his water because that's the brand I feel works best. I hope he fully recovers he curently is looking really stressed and I think it's causing him sickness and weakness. Don't forget to stick around. I'll be posting updates everyday .

i would have to disagree with Penna about the fact he is scared. However, often a bully stays a bully.. it's just the personality of the particular fish, I had the same problem, if the bully continues, maybe consider trading/giving him to your LFS also keep in mind, often fish pick on the 'sick guy' or 'weak'. as far as the sick fish he could have an internal parasite. You could try treating him with Melafix or Pimafix (i swear by the stuff) for the parasite/fin rot. (forget which does which)

I appriciate your thoughts.... but in the first post I stated that he was probably stressed from all the bullying and he didn't get moved into a new tank the bully got moved into a new tank. Perhaps in the first post I phrased that wrong, but we definately have both had a mis-communication. Thank you for coming forward though and trying to help. Quite a few people seem to be reluctant to click and unfortunately I don't have enough info that I do need. He is trying ot swim.... but looks like a druggie fish well trying to do so. HE is certainly a fighter.

It's to bad he's in such disaray. Well, I found PimaFix. It was a long search. The little bit of fungus is already going. I guess no one here knows about colapsed gills and swim bladder problems? His gill that does work also looks like it's working over time and it's quite red. People think they may have figured out the problem with that one gill besides the fact that it looks like it's collapsed it has a large non-hemraging cut on it :S. Perhaps, why it might only work part time.

The bullying you describe sounds like rough spawning behavior. The males can get really rough on the females in the small space a tank provides.

I don't like mixing meds if I can help it and it sounds like you have at least two viable plans in progress or coming with the Jungle brand and the API brands. The only addition I would make is to get about a tablespoon of table salt predissolved added to the tank for each five gallons of water. Follow all the directions on the medications instructions and readd the salt to the replacement water during water changes to replace what you removed cleaning.

I would plan on seperate housing for these two long term until something roomy like a pond is added. Comets grow large so indoors I'd want at least a 30 gallon aquarium for each. Bigger is always better though.

Hey All,

I think I need a break from fish . She passed on..... however, I am in the mean time pursuing the company that sold me the plant. Something certainly does smell fishy . I cintacted a fish vet and learned some things from her. In the mean time I found things on the net by other people who had problems with this company. Not to worry though I plan to stick around on this net. I'm not out of the fish business yet. I got 2 goldfish and betta left. One of the Goldfish is 11 years old .
