Ich

I noticed this morning that one of my bleeding hearts has ich...he had the white spots all over him. I immediately went to my computer and came onto these boards to read how to fix this problem. I read the entire article on how to treat it, but still have a few questions.

I will list my fish to see if I should raise the temperature in the tank.

It's a 55 gallon...I have :

2 dalmatian mollies
2 ghost catfish
2 bleeding hearts
2 red sword tails
1 gold sword tail
2 gold platys
4 zebra danios
1 pleco

can these fish handle a high temperature? Right now, my temp is between 76-78.

I added some salt this morning, but didn't want to add too much yet. I did about 10 tablespoons. Also, which salt is best?

I want to treat this correctly, and am still a beginner at this hobby. I realize I may lose my bleeding heart, although I hope I can save him.

I do weekly water changes, and my water has tested perfect every time. I bring a sample to my LFS, the guy there has tested it for me 3 times so far.
I also bought a test kit myself.

Is there something I did wrong to cause ICH?

Sorry about all the questions, I'm just concerned and want to treat this.

Thanks so much.

Re: Ich

Hey Googs....

Just follow the advice in the article.

Add the salt, (NaCl) table salt, over a period of 24 hours to allow the fish to adjust to it.

Temperatures at about 85 degrees F are usually fatal to ICH and the salt is a guarantee. Your fish should be ok.

You need to start the therapy soon at the full strength and temp stated in the article, before the ICH does serious damage to the fish.

The ICH was introduced into your tank, you did nothing wrong, perhaps you will consider a quarantine tank in the future.

Regards,
Jay
