Antibiotics I will never use on fish. |

| Re: Small Red Cap is clamped and hiding. Well...1st big moor died today. 4 fish gone in 4 days. I have little doubt that the other moor will be next. Really sucks that there is nothing I can do. |

Lastly, and I am surprised that BJP didnt bring this up, always quarantine new fish. Not only does this allow you some defense as far as having problems with illness/disease in your main tank(s), you can also often times have more ability to nurse neglected fish back to health. It is certainly an investment that can save you a ton of money over the long run...sort of like insurance.

I would have but I've said it so much that it's bound to start sounding like a broken record. I've got a five gallon QT ready formally known as the Cycle versus the orandas tank. No way would I trust going straight into the 20 with the two survivors from the first goldfish purchase.
Not QTing is rolling the dice and in terms of goldfish health this year I'm batting two survivors out of seven tries. I'm hoping for at least a 50% survivability on this try. | It may be too late for this batch but if anyone survives a good long quarantine period for any new one's should go without saying. |

| Re: Small Red Cap is clamped and hiding. Probably right. And I should have kept everyone in the 29 until I controlled the situation. Should I take this fish out with the net, hold it and try to feed it? |

| Re: Small Red Cap is clamped and hiding. I don't think hand feeding would accomplish much. I've lost count. Is this the last fish?
I would look into getting the 29 gallon set up and ready for quarantine duty. If you lose this fish which I still hope you don't, get some plain ammonia and cycle the 55 out.
Select your next fish from a single tank and give them a long quarantine period before trying to add any others or relocating them to the 55. Eventually someone will pull through the qt period safely and have a nice 55 waiting for them. Maybe enough on the first try to fill the 55, maybe with two rounds. I'm on my third this year. 2 survivors and 2 in qt with hope they'll make it through the qt. |

| Re: Small Red Cap is clamped and hiding. Yes. This is the last fish. Sitting near the Penguin Filter outflow (near the top). Doesn't like the light on and darts to the bottom when they go on. Not eating.
Today I checked my tank water and I really can't figure something out. Using the API kit, PH seems much higher than usual. 7.6 Out of the tap, it's in the low 6s. Mardel test strips came out the same. 6.4 out of the tap and mid 7s from the tank. Kh out of the tap is sub 80. Gh was about 120 in both.
0 ammonia. .25 nitrites. 10 ppm nitrates.
Temp is mid 70s.
Did a 10 gallon water change to reduce the nitrites (as always added 1 tsp salt per gallon and some baking soda. I'll add qc again tonight (since I did it last night).
Hoping he makes it. |

| Re: Small Red Cap is clamped and hiding. Last black moor is still living, but sitting on the bottom for the most part. Eyes are cloudy with what looks like a white outline. Won't eat.
Tonight is day 5 of the quick cure. I also changed out another 5 gallons and added prime, salt and some baking soda. The next 24 hours will be critical. |

| Re: Small Red Cap is clamped and hiding. The baking soda is elevating the Ph like normal. I really don't think it's needed though and if you let the tank run in the acid range then most of the ammonia that comes along would show up in the less toxic form of ammonium. Mom's had a pond full of goldfish in super soft acid water since 95 I believe.
I wouldn't change it at once though. Just stop with the baking soda and let water changes bring it down slowly. |

| Re: Small Red Cap is clamped and hiding. It's the am. My moor is still kicking. He's swimming around a little and seems more comfortable since I turned off on of the filters (the small one) giving him a place to rest. His eyes are cloudy, he has redness on the lower part of one eye, and he seems to have a bit of white film on him. Is that his protective slime?
Water parameters are 75 degrees, mid 7s ph, 0 ammonia, .25 nitrite. 5-10 ppm nitrate. Kh is around 80 or so. Gh is 120.
Going to do yet another water change. Then I'll add prime, salt and no baking soda. Also, I'll do a prazi treatment this morning and, if all is still well, a quick cure treatment (day 6 of 7) tonight. |

| Re: Small Red Cap is clamped and hiding. If this is parasitic, my research says Costia. But if it's bacterial, my research says Septicemia or other bacterial infection (the red in the eye together with the other symptoms. ). So it's a 50 50 shot I guess. |
