Nose turned black

When I brought my tetra goldfish home he was completely gold. Over the past two weeks he first developed a small white bump on his nose, then his entire nose turned black. Is this a natural color change or should I be concerned? From what I've read about ich it probably wouldn't be that--there's one spot and it's quite large (about 1/2 a centementer). Clyde has had a companion twice, but both times the companion died suddenly without seeming particularly ill or unhappy. I'm pretty upset--after two goldfish dying on me I don't feel okay about going out and getting more, and I REALLY like having goldfish so Clyde is my last hope!

fungus,

test your water and if the conditions are good, I recomend treating him with a general bactieria and fungicide. Could also be a nutrition thing, what are you feeding him?

give us some more information on his habitat and we should be able to give you more specific advice on the best protocol for the particular illness that he has. General fungicides and treatments like the one alexfevery recommended work well enough, but if we can narrow it down you may be able to target it better
