In that case, maybe you could really benifit from a deeper layer of gravel or sand. This way you could harbor more benificial bacteria which may make quicker work out of that detrius and stuff you noticed when you moved the tank. I think that a good layer would be close to an inch to inch and a half. This would just help establish more bacteria in the tank where the food and detrius can collect rather than keeping it totally concentrated in your filter media.

Do you use a python or similar type siphon vaccum? This will be really critical to your ability to keep that detrius down and out of the tank. There are several people on here who can tell you how to make your own, or you can find them at Walmart...I believe it was BJP who said he saw them there.
