| Fin rot or Septicemia? ...... or both? :( My Comets' tails have gone ragged on the edges and a few of their fins have split, not very much but on the edges there is a few strands missing, also there is red streaks running through the fins and on the end of one of the fishes tails is patches of blood, very upsetting to see. I did have golden minnows in with them but 2 got eaten so took the rest out and this has developed since, i dont know if it is stress. I bought Myxazin and have been putting that in the tank but im worried there might be another thing wrong that this treatment is not gonna work for. All advice very much appreciated. The fish dont look ill, they are very much still lively as ever ( which is very lively, very funny fish!) Thank you again xx |

| Re: Fin rot or Septicemia? ...... or both? :( I agree it sounds like both. High ammonia levels can cause the fins to deteriorate as well. You can often see a white or black edging on the decaying fins if it's fun rot, but not always. The red streaks sure sounds like Septicima, but like Mark said, with out water parameters and other info, it can be hard to say. Pics would help a lot too. Although adding new fish to the tank can sometimes cause problems like this to happen, in my experiance it seems to usually lead back to a water quality issue. Water changes usually help! May not solve everything, but it's almost ways a good idea. |

| Re: Fin rot or Septicemia? ...... or both? :( fin rot is often cause by stress mixed with other fish picking on them...i dunno if thats the issue with yours without more option but the septicemia is most likely a water issue like zero said |

| Re: Fin rot or Septicemia? ...... or both? :( Thaks for all the advice! Because im new to all this, im not sure on what the parameters should be, but I took some water to the fish shop and he said it was fine, this is when i went to buy the Myxazin, I went in today to buy medicine for Septicemia but he doesnt sell it??? Aquatics store and no medicine...... but anyways I bought some aquatic salts and one of the vacuum thingies to help with rubbish on the bottom and did a 25% water change, they are still as playful as ever and are eating fine, im just worried. Im taking another water sample in tomorrow for him.
Ill give you the low down on my underwater land
28 liter with filter, this is all about a month old, bought new.
2 comets in there rescued from a bad bad home.
I put water revitaliser and stress coat in every time i do a water change, and now they are having Myxazin once a day and i have put a teaspoon on aqua salts in.
They did have real plants but i have taken them out and replaced with fake worried that this was the cause that they were dying becuase they turned brown. I will try and get a picture of them for you all to look at, i have quite a rubbish camera though so quality may be bad. But thank you all again for your help, i do hope their tails get better, this is the only part that is affected on them.

| Re: Fin rot or Septicemia? ...... or both? :( Hey there Jadestar..next time you take your water in and they say it is fine I would ask them what the heck fine means? Ask for specifics like Nitrate, ammonia, Nitrite, ph, kh, etc. See how much they really are testing and their knowledge. I would not trust any of my watery friends to just anyone. Keep us posted. Glad they are still frisky and eating.

| Re: Fin rot or Septicemia? ...... or both? :( Hey again, Well the men have finished their medication, fins still ragged and still red veins in their tails, doesnt look any worse but hasnt got any better, but i dont know how long they take to look better to be honest. The larger comet has started swimming a little lop sided but they are still bonkers as ever and go crazy when i go near the tank..... mainly for food, the greedy boys, but i have put them on a lettuce diet which they like and feed them tetra gold exotic food every 3rd day or something, they are still a beautiful briliant golden colour and not acting poorly, i dont know what else to do, because they never acted ill i dont know weather the Myxazin has worked, i asked for something for septicemia but they didnt sell anything, im wondering if they have soldiered through it, if a fish had some sort of fatal ailment would they be looking ill and on deaths door by now, its been well over a week now. I keep the light off in there tank now, they dont like it, they hide when i turn it on. So apart from their scraggly tail im stumped and just enjoying watching them swim and play and get giddy when i go near them, they even let me put my hand in nowand come playing and kissing it ^^ But yes i shall definatley ask for parameters next time i go in with water and look them up!!!!! Thanks again for help everyone, i dont know what id do without you ^^
