| Grouper Problem Hey so my Blue Line grouper has been in my quarintine tank for a couple weeks now, and looks really good. He is eating well too. The other day I thought it was time to introduce him back into the display tank. So I gave him a freshwater dip, and put him in the display tank. He looked alright, but the next day he had some strange white spots on him. Also some light colored blotches. He showed no signs of this in the hospital tank. I got nervous and removed him from the display tank, dipped him again and put him back in the hosp. tank. He looks good again. no spots or anything.
Do groupers get white spots that are not a disease? also light red/brown color spots? Can the disease be hidden in the hosp. tank and only shows up in the display? or is this just his body reacting to the change of environment?
any info would help. thanks.

| Re: Grouper Problem According to the great Bob Fenner the answer is yes, they do. He has narrowed what you have described to two possible issues. Obviously the first issue would be water. If the Blue Line is good in quarantine and then changes in display, perhaps it is the water. What are your NitrAte readings? Next, it is suggested it could be psychological. What other inhabitants are in the display? again, it would be very helpful if we knew what the water perams are in the display AND the quarantine. Good luck, they are really neat fish.

| Re: Grouper Problem thank you. I will try and get some water readings later today. The display tank houses a small volitan lion and humu trigger. The grouper is larger than both. When I put him in the display tank he acted alright. He hides a lot. But he ate well.
I think I will monitor him for a few more days, then reintroduce him to the display tank. Hopefully the white spots are just a reaction to the environment change, and will go away.

| Re: Grouper Problem Groupers will change color (fade/darken) and "spot under stress. This experience you had is why I am not in favor of QTs. Think about it, he was captured from the ocean (stress) put in the LFS tank (stress) brought home by you and put in QT (stress) then put in your main tank (stress), that's 4 different environments! And now (I'm not badgering) he's back in QT and then will go back in main tank. I suggest you acclimate him to your main tank and let him get adjusted.

| Re: Grouper Problem I will absolutely acclimate him before introducing him back to the main tank.
I just got nervous because his "stress spots" were white and looked similar to ich.

| Re: Grouper Problem One other thing, I know of no ick that comes on almost immediately. It would take at least a few days if none were present in th QT. Some advice? Use a product called Marine-Max by Tropical Science. All natural completely reef safe (I sound like an advertisement) bacteria that boost the fishes slime coat and immune system so they won't get ick.
