I will have to double check but I thought about this thread yesterday when I was browsing through the latest issue of Tropical Fish Hobbyist because on page 51 (which is the part I will have to look up again), there is an article which hits upon this same topic and says that saltwater fish should be fed saltwater feeders. There are some decent alternatives to that though...I believe glass shrimp (the marine equivalent of ghost shrimp) are a decent option and I have noticed that many online LFS carry them.

In any case, I still think it is much much easier and safer to ween a fish off of live foods and onto prepared foods. That way you don't have to spend a lot of time, money, or effort on quarantining feeder fish and all of that fun stuff. In fact, one of my first fish were a lionfish and porcupine puffer that I foolishly bought even though they were always fed live guppies and rosy reds and I got frustrated because every so often one of the feeder fish was smart enough to hide where it couldn't be reached - both by my fish and myself - and just died there. I do agree that it is very cool to watch a lionfish stalk and then suck up a fish...but even that loses its luster after a while.

Re: lion fish not eating

G day,

My LFS feeds their lionfish neons and white clouds, both freshwater species. Should I say something?

How is your water quality? What do the tests come out to?

Are you using ro/di water? Does the fish look sick? Acting lethargic?

Sometimes it can be really hard to determine what is wrong with a fish.

Is he exhibiting any other symptoms?
