tang question

Hi,
I have a new Rhino tang. About 3 days after getting it from the pet store, I noticed an abrasion on it's side and fin tip, where it touches the side abrasion. It was a white area and the fin looked slightly damaged (frayed). It was not cotton-like as in a fungus. This could be simply an abrasion from a rock or another fish. My tang seems to be behaving normally and eating well. I've added mela-fix. Does anyone else have any other suggestions? -Greg

By any chance are you refering to the unicorn tang or Naso Unicornis. The infection is probally a bacterial infection so treating it with MelaFix is a good idea. Remember to watch out for it rubbing up against tank decor because it could be a self inflicted wound from a parasitic problom. It would be great if you included a picture and keep us updated if it proggress then it will be alot less complecated to diagnose. Hope you tang gets better

Here are two pictures. I'm sorry the quality is so low. It was hard to shoot through the glass and the fist wouldn't stay still. The abrasions are at the bottom of the blue oval in the tang's side. They were white and are now a darker greyish, which I'm hoping is healing. -Greg

Looks live an abrasion to me, just dose melafix as directed. Be aware of your collection cup on your skimmer ( if you have one ) it makes them overflow like crazy. Also for added fish health maybe you should look into a product called Marine-max.. It a immune booster for fish. I've been dosing my tank with this stuff for years and my fish are and always have been super healthy.
