| Porcupine Puffer Hi All,
First time post....
I am hoping someone can tell me if I should be concerned that my porcupine pufferfish looks a little yellow/green. We've had him a week and I've checked water quality. Everything looks good. Nitrates are about at 30 -- a little highter than I'd like. I can't get the nitrates to budge down with water changes. http://www.fishtankforums.com/images...s/confused.gif I use RO water. I don't get that. But, my immediate concern is the pufferfish. Any info would be of help.

| Re: Porcupine Puffer Hello JCC,
First off Welcome to FTF's, glad you have found us!
The link you posted does not show a picture, only a smiley face with question marks. Also is the water you are using RO/DI or just RO. The reason I ask is because up until last week I use to use the RO filtered water. Until I have had numerous deaths of livestock with no apparent reason. I also am battling a green hair algae breakout. I then ran tests on the water I was using, I came up with small traces of Nitrates and an even bigger traces of Ammonia. I found out the reason for this is the lack of a Deionization(DI) filter. It traps ions in the water column that RO filters cant catch.
I was dumping Ammonia ridden freshly mixed water in my display tank, obv not the ideal thing to do. It caused 2 of my fish enough stress to kill them and I also lost my beautiful Carpet Anenome. I would mix up a fresh batch of water and test it prior to adding it in your tank. Make sure all readings are good, if not you might have to invest in a 5 stage RO/DI unit for the home. Mine ran me about $135.
HTH, Brad

| Re: Porcupine Puffer I agree with Brad in that all I get is a smiley face when I click on your link. That being said, I am not sure how concerned you should be about the color of your porcupine puffer since they can range in color quite a bit. For the most part, I have noticed that most of them are rather greenish to a light brown when they are young, but grow up to look a lot like the desert camoflage uniforms people in the military wear, or used to wear (light brown with some darker brown spots).
Probably not a whole lot of help, but if you could try to post that photo again, perhaps that would shed a little more light on the subject. |
