Flowerpot coral and clownfish conflict

I bought a flowerpot coral a few weeks ago. Shame on me! After researching I would not have bought it. None the less, it was doing fine right up until Sunday. Prior, it would extend out all day and wave in the current.

Monday I saw what the problem is. My tomato clown is trying to host it. It does not like the clown at all. The clown is also nipping at is like he did with the BTA prior to it's death. My first thoughts are to get another BTA since I feel I have a better grasp on how to care for it.

Another option is to take the coral back.

Or, has anyone seen an improvement between the two over time?

Re: Flowerpot coral and clownfish conflict

I have a maroon clown that has now basically killed my Torch LPS after he hosted in it. The corals just don't like to be touched that much. I have a friend with a pair of true perculas that host up in his flower pot and it seems ok. But the difference in my experience is tomatos are the most aggressive clowns and will probably have an ill effect on the flowerpot. The perculas are pretty gentle with the flowerpot and don't get up in it like a tomato or a maroon would. If you have had luck with a BTA in the past i would get another one and the clown will most likely leave the flowerpot alone.

My tomato clown took to the new BTA within hours. The flower pot coral is back to normal. The new BTA is a little small be they both seem happy.

Make sure you spot feed your Flowerpot... In my experience with those, i learned they are one of the harder LPS to keep.. I wish you luck and hope you have better success than I did. Keep us posted will ya?--->CBR

IME and in my research flowerpots are very difficult to keep, I wish you good luck with it.

Thanks,

I failed to research it when I bought it. So, I'll see how it goes. I'm feeding my corals with a live plankton product. Should I also feed it brime shrimp?

Re: Flowerpot coral and clownfish conflict

I've saved a few goni's at my store and I have notices that they prefer "dirtier" water. Water that would have slightly more nutrients in it than you'd like to see in a LPS tank. Live phyto will suffice but I would try something a little larger, reef plankton, cyclops and the like, problem is getting it the goni

Good Luck
I'll have to post a pic of the baby I have grown from 4 polyps to 25+
