They used natural ocean water, the tank had corals in it.
The nitrates were almost ALWAYS 20-30 PPm INSIDE the plenum chamber, but inside the tank nitrates often dropped below 5ppm, which is what they started with in their ocean water.
Basically the plenum chamber just adds more surface area for bacteria to grow, and if you do it right, no gunk and decaying matter will make its way all the way down through the sand, and through the plenum and accumulate | What magazine was it? I would really like to read the whole article. Also, how can you compare a 75 gal. tank to a 500 gal tank? The dillution factor alone is huge not to mention the types of livestock that are available for a tank that size compared to a 75, you are compairing apples to oranges.

| I'm really not sure what magazine it was... Maybe FAMA, maybe it was the Reef only magazine... not sure, I read it pretty recently when I worked at petco.
As far as comparing apples to oranges yes a 500 is going to have more stable params, but if it works in a 500, why not my 55, why not any other tank? So far I am having really, really good luck with the way mine is set up, but only time will tell how it does in the long run, as my tank has only been up and running for about 2 months |

I have seen many thing work short term, 2 months is hardly fully cycled yet though but I would like to see it in a year or more. |
